Why I'm Blogging

I love the Bible. It literally changed my life 11 years ago. Actually, it transformed my life. Or rather, God did through it. In it, I found out who God is, what he's like, who I am, and what my purpose is. It is where I met my Savior, and it is how I discovered his great love for me. I continue to read the Bible often, eager to meet with God again. God spoke. The Bible is God's Word. It is God's revelation of himself to all mankind.

There is no other book like it, the most influential book in all of history. If you live in America, you benefit greatly from this book, whether you recognize it or not. Much of our Western culture has been influenced by the Bible. Universities, hospitals, orphanages, slavery abolishment; started by people of The Book. Hard work ethic, criminal justice, democracy, and science are all things that we can thank the influence of the Bible for (or people of the Bible).

But the Bible is for more than just human flourishing, it was given to us so that we might know God and make him known to others. That's why I'm blogging. I want to know God and his Word, and I want to help others know him.

Remembering

When I'm reading or studying the Bible, I like to read it slowly and take in as much as I can. At times in this process (not always), God graciously shows me something from it I never saw before. Connections brew in my mind. I ponder how awesome God is. My wife is often the first one to hear about it. But then... days later I forget about it. God shows me something from his Word, and then I don't do much with it afterward. To be fair, I believe God's Word is continuing to work beyond that, even if subconsciously (Isa. 55:11).

Other times, I am reading a really good book like The Sabbath as Rest and Hope for the People of God by Guy Prentiss Waters. I learn some really cool things. But again, I don't capture it anywhere for myself. Nor do I synthesize and repeat what I've read, a great way to learn!

Part of the reason I'm blogging is because I want to capture those insights. I want to be able to synthesize what I've learned and then come back to it later. Blogging also forces me to allocate time to this task. So that's one reason. I don't want to forget.

Sharing with Others

I could accomplish the previous goal by simply writing in a private journal. But this leads me to the next reason why I'm blogging. I like sharing the Bible with others. I like teaching others how to understand the Bible. My wife and I teach our kids regularly from the Bible. There is no better place for feeding your kids wisdom (Proverbs 9:10)! But more importantly, there's no other way to learn about salvation in Jesus, and how to follow him in this life! Which is an utmost priority for me as a father.

My hope and prayer is that as you read anything from this blog, it would be a means by which God shows you his glory from his Word. I only want to be a messenger, because it's not about me. It's about God. If you learn something about God that you didn't know before, that's a win for me!

An Experiment

This blog is an experiment. I don't know how it will turn out. In fact, I don't even know if I have the writing skills for a blog! I'm not sure how often I'll be able to blog even, but here is what I'm targeting:

  • The content will be either something from the Bible, or something I've learned from a book about the Bible. It may be more devotional, or more studious. I may occasionally do personal reflection.
  • The content should typically have a life application. What good is it to fill your head with Bible knowledge but not know how it can change you inside?
  • Each post should take no longer than 5-10 mins to read. Maybe even less. We have busy lives!

One catalyst for this blog was that I would like to potentially write a book someday. I envision a book being composed of blog posts, so that the content would be freely accessible but with a physical copy available. But that's future stuff!

Thanks for reading, I hope you are blessed by posts to come! Grace and peace.
